1. أَلّا شَعَرتُ بِرِحلَةِ الأَظعانِ

    فَيَكونَ شَأنُهُمُ بِرامَةِ شاني

    I wish I knew the path of the night travelers,

    So I could follow and reach my beloved.

  2. ماذا عَلى الرَشَأِ الغَريرِ لَوَ انَّهُ

    رَوّى جَوى المُتَلَدِّدِ الحَرّانِ

    What if the slim crescent, shining bright,

    Quenched my burning thirst like sweet morning dew?

  3. سَكَنٌ يُنازِعُني الصُدودَ وَكاشِحٌ

    يَسعى عَليَّ وَعاذِلٌ يَلحاني

    The jealous reproach and the spy pursue me,

    While my love remains fixed and true.

  4. وَلَعَلَّ مامَلَكَ العَذولُ مَقادَتي

    في الحُبِّ أَو حَبَسَ المَشيبُ عِناني

    Has fate made me unfit for love,

    Or has old age chained my passions?

  5. لا يَذهَبَنَّ عَلَيكِ فَرطُ صَبابَتي

    وَتَرادُفُ الكَمَدِ الَّذي أَبلاني

    Let not my fervent youth make you doubt,

    Neither my perseverance that has tried me.

  6. وَتَعَلَّمي أَنَّ اعتِلاقي حَبلَكُم

    ذُلّي وَأَنَّ هَوايَ فيكِ هَواني

    Know that my bond to you has humbled me,

    And that my passion for you brings me low.

  7. إِمّا أَقَمتُ فَإِنَّ لُبّي ظاعِنٌ

    أَوسِرتُ مُنطَلِقاً فَقَلبِيَ عانِ

    If I stay, my heart is torn with sadness;

    If I go, grief leaves me no peace.

  8. سُقِيَت مَعاهِدُكِ اللَواتي شُقنَني

    وَمَحَلُّ مَنزِلِكِ الَّذي استَبكاني

    Those who blamed our love now pity me,

    And the place of our trysts fills me with pain.

  9. وَأَرى خَيالَكِ لايَزالُ مَعَ الكَرى

    مُتَعَرِّضاً أَلقاهُ أَو يَلقاني

    Your phantom is always there taunting me,

    Whether I see it or my eyes play tricks.

  10. يُدني إِلَيَّ مِنَ الوِصالِ شَبيهَ ما

    تُدنينَهُ أَبَداً مِنَ الهِجرانِ

    It seems to offer the union I crave,

    While you refuse to end this separation.

  11. عَصَبِيَّتي لِلشامِ تُضرِمُ لَوعَتي

    وَتَزيدُ في كَلَفي وَفي أَشجاني

    My Syrian blood fires my agony

    And adds to my suffering and torment.

  12. كانَت بِعَبدِ اللَهِ أَحظى خُطَّةً

    بِنَوافِلِ الإِفضالِ وَالإِحسانِ

    With Abdullah fate was kinder before,

    Giving freely, not denying or preventing.

  13. حَتّى تَرَحَّلَ سائِراً فَتَبَدَّلَت

    بَعدَ العَطاءِ غَضاضَةَ الحِرمانِ

    But then his gifts were replaced

    By deprivation, testing my patience.

  14. إِن تَكتَئِب حَلَبٌ فَقَد غَلَبَت عَلى

    حَلَبِ الغَمامِ وَصَوبِهِ التَهتانِ

    If Aleppo now grieves, it has defeated

    Other famed cities in their glory and pride.

  15. وَعَلى أَنيقِ الرَوضِ يُزهِرُ بَينَهُ

    أَفوافُ نَورٍ مُعجِبِ الأَلوانِ

    Yet in its beautiful gardens, flowers bloom

    In a rainbow of wondrous colors bright.

  16. مِن واضِحٍ يَقَقٍ وَأَصفَرَ فاقِعٍ

    وَمُضَرَّجٍ جَسِدٍ وَأَحمَرَ قانِ

    A rain cloud traveled from the west

    To bring water to the east cities parched.

  17. غَيثٌ تَحَمَّلَ عَنهُمُ مُتَوَجِّهاً

    مِن غَربِهِم لِمَشارِقِ البُلدانِ

    If it waters Persia, after the thirst

    Of the Harran quarter here is quenched,

  18. إِن أُسقِيَتهُ فارِسٌ فَبِعَقبِ ما

    ظَمِأَت جَوانِبُ رَبعِها الحَرّانِ

    Or if it reaches Euphrates folk, they will say

    Another Euphrates came to help.

  19. أَو عاجَ في أَهلِ الفُراتِ فَإِنَّهُ

    سَيُقالُ جاءَهُمُ فُراتٌ ثانِ

    A King whose rule has eased our life

    With justice both gentle and wise.

  20. مَلِكٌ هَصَرنا العَيشَ في جَنَباتِهِ

    غَضَّ المَكاسِرِ لَيِّنَ الأَفنانِ

    He rules the people with fairness and care,

    In public and private likewise.

  21. أَعطى الرَعِيَّةَ حُكمَها مِن عَدلِهِ

    في السِرِّ مُجتَهِداً وَفي الإِعلانِ

    Not like the tyrant who imposes his power

    Or the weak man no one relies.

  22. غَيرُ العَنوفِ الفَظِّ حينَ يَجُدُّ في

    جَمعِ الخَراجِ وَلا الضَعيفِ الواني

    Such politics have long been known

    To masters from the house of Khaqan.

  23. وَهيَ السِياسَةُ لَم تَزَل مَعروفَةً

    لِذَوي السِياسَةِ مِن بَني خاقانِ

    Those who revere God and fear His wrath,

    And counsel sincerity to the Sultan,

  24. المُعلِنينَ تُقى الإِلَهِ وَخَوفَهُ

    وَالمُؤثِرينَ نَصيحَةَ السُلطانِ

    And who build glory never seen before

    To boast on the day all stand to be judged.

  25. وَالرافِعينَ بِناءَ مَجدٍ لَم يَكُن

    لِيَطولَهُ يَومَ التَفاخُرِ بانِ

    The court and councils are filled with dignitaries

    Walking proudly in their stately stride.

  26. تَبهى المَواكِبُ وَالمَجالِسُ مِنهُمُ

    بِمُبَجَّلينَ عَلى الوَقارِ رِزانِ

    My soul is ransom for my uncle Muhammad

    Whose nobility I extol with pride.

  27. نَفسي فِداءُ أَبي مُحَمَّدٍِ الَّذي

    مازِلتُ أَحمَدُ في ذَراهُ مَكاني

    A brother who enriched me beyond

    What other brothers provide.

  28. خِلٌّ بَلَغتُ بِرَأيِهِ شَرَفَ العُلا

    وَأَخٌ غَنيتُ بِهِ عَنِ الإِخوانِ

    May God reward you for what

    My thanks cannot quantify.

  29. اللَهُ يَجزيكَ الَّذي لَم يَجزِهِ

    شُكري وَلَم يَبلُغ مَداهُ لِساني

    I hold your honor beyond any luxury

    Or days of joy or times so sublime.

  30. أَعتَدُّ عِزَّكَ مِن وُفورِ مَذاهِبي

    وَسُعودِ أَيّامي وَحُسنِ زَماني

    Though the road to Jaʿfar is now denied me,

    You remain always near.

  31. وَإِذا المَسافَةُ دونَ نائِلِ جَعفَرٍ

    بَعُدَت عَلَيَّ فَإِنَّ نَيلَكَ دانِ

    Whenever I count on you to help one in need,

    I pledge myself and my guarantee.

  32. وَمَتى ضَمِنتُ عَلَيكَ حاجَةَ طالِبٍ

    كَفَلَت يَداكَ بِذِمَّتي وَضَماني
