يَزيدُ قَلبي بِصَدِّهِ مَرَضاً
ظَبيٌ غَريرٌ في طَرفِهِ مَرَضُ
He makes my heart sicker by turning away—
a guileless gazelle with languor in his gaze.
إِن صَدَّ عَنّي بِوَجهِهِ عَبَثاً
فَفي قَفاهُ مِن وَجهِهِ عِوَضُ
If he turns his face away from me, it is in vain:
for his nape is a substitute for his face.
لَو شاهَدَ الشَريفُ مائِعتَرَضَت
عائِقَةٌ في الحَبيبِ تَعتَرِضُ
Had al-Sharif seen him, there would have arisen no
hindrance such as might arise concerning the beloved.
