خَرِسَ الثَرى وَتَكَلَّمَ الزَهرُ

وَبَكى السَحابُ وَقَهقَهَ القَطرُ

The earth fell silent, and the flowers spoke,

The clouds wept, and the raindrops laughed,

نَشَرَ الرَبيعُ بُرودَ مَكرُمَةٍ

خُضراً يَقومُ بِنَشرِها الشِعرُ

Spring spread its gentle chill,

Which poetry spreads with green,

وَكَأَنَّ صُفرَ بَهارِها ذَهَبٌ

وَكَأَنَّ حُمرَ شَقيقِها جَمرُ

Its yellow blossoms like gold,

Its red anemones like embers,

يا سائِلي عَن عاشِقٍ دَنَفٍ

ما حالُ مَن نَدمانُهُ الهَجرُ

Oh you who ask about a love-sick lean lover,

What is the state of one whom separation grieves,

صَبٌّ عَلَيهِ مِنَ الهَوى حُلَلٌ

مِن تَحتِهِنَّ مَفاصِلٌ غُبرُ

On him passions of love like garments,

Beneath them joints covered in dust,

فَكَأَنَّ يَومَ حَياتِهِ سَنَةٌ

وَكَأَنَّ ساعَةَ لَيلِهِ دَهرُ

So that his day of life becomes like a year,

And an hour of his night like an epoch,

لِمَ لا يَموتُ فَتىً يُعَذِّبُهُ

صَنَمٌ لَهُ مِن فِضَّةٍ نَحرُ

Why doesn't the youth die whom

A silver idol tortures with cleavage?
