قُل لِلجَنوبِ إِذا غَدَوتَ فَأَبلِغي

كَبِدي نَسيماً مِن جَنابِ نَسيمِ

Tell the south wind when it stirs at dawn

To bring my heart a breeze from your side

أَخُدِعتُ عَنكَ وَأَنتَ بَدرٌ خادِعٌ

لِلَّيلِ عَن ظُلَمٍ لَهُ وَغُيومِ

I was deceived away from you though you are

A misleading full moon to the night’s darkness and clouds

كَرُمَ الزَمانُ وَلُمتُ فيكَ وَلَن تَرى

عَجَباً سِوى كَرَمِ الزَمانِ وَلَومي

Time was generous and I blamed you though you’ll see

No wonder but time’s generosity and my blaming

وَظَلَمتُ نَفسي جاهِداً في ظُلمِها

فَاِسمَع مَقالَةَ ظالِمٍ مَذلومِ

And I did injustice to myself struggling in its injustice

So hear the words of an unjust blamer who is wronged

قَد زادَ يَومُ البُؤسِ بَعدَكَ أَنَّهُ

أَفضى إِلَيَّ بِعُقبِ يَومِ نَعيمِ

The day of misery after you increased that it

Came to me after the day of bliss

فَأَقَمتَ في قَلبي وَشَخصُكَ سائِرٌ

لا تَبعَدَن مِن ظاعِنٍ وَمُقيمِ

So you stayed in my heart while your figure walks away

Neither far from one longing nor one staying

لا كانَ وَجدي أَينَ كانَ وَأَنتَ لي

مِلكٌ وَعَهدي مِنكَ غَيرُ ذَميمِ

If my devotion was wherever you were and you are

To me a king and my covenant with you is not ignoble

الآنَ أَطمَعُ في هَواكَ وَدونَهُ

عَينُ الرَقيبِ وَبابُ إِبراهيمِ

Now I aspire to your love though below it
