He spent the night chatting with me until dawn,

Like a supple branch in place of a pillow.

As if he smiles with pearls arranged

    Or chilled, or unripe fruits.

You may think him drowsy, blinking

    From heavy eyelids while vigilant.

I’d ransom him, not graze him

To forbid a warner from him, or a sharp-tongued guardian.

I mix my cup with the saliva of his mouth,

Yet I mix only pleasure with pleasure.

He showers roses on us, while

The dawn glistens with the breeze’s spray.

I overlook some of what should be shunned

Of unease in loving him or misstep.

The sorcery of languid eyes consumes

My heart, and the blush of ruddy cheeks.

Say to my father Noah, kinsman of dew,

And spring of generosity and ally of reconciliation,

I seek refuge in the good opinion you held

And in the asker made readily welcome,

Lest you turn your eyes from me and

I fail in your bounty after success.

If I have sinned, then pardon, and if

I have no sin, then why rejection?

Beyond the sundering of firm ties

    From excessive thanks and praise,

It tells of a heart long loving you

And a breast sincere in lamenting.

My enemies rejoiced and you delivered me

From your yielded sword that afflicted me.

Is there any hope for company that is gone,

Or any chance for a state fallen from grace?

I am in anguish from your rejection,

My heart writhes, and wings beat.

I have not the fortitude to withstand your wrath,

Nor the arms to withstand your estrangement.
