أَبا عَلِيٍّ يا فَتى الأَشعَرِ
وَاِبنَ فَتاها السَيِّدِ الأَزهَرِ
O Abu Ali, O youth of al-Ash'ar,
O Abū ‘Alī, O youth of Ash‘ar,
and son of its youth, the radiant lord,
And son of their chief, the most fragrant,
قَد كَمَلَ المَجدُ لِقَحطانَ إِذ
كَمَلتَ لِلسَيفِ وَلِلمِنبَرِ
glory became complete for Qahtan when
Glory is now complete for Qahtan,
you attained perfection in sword and pulpit.
As you are complete in sword and minbar.
وَاِبنُ أَبي جَعفَرٍِ المُرتَجى
لِمِثلِ أَفعالِ أَبِي جَعفَرِ
And the son of Abu Ja'far, in whom hope is placed
Son of Abū Ja‘far, the hoped-for one,
for deeds like those of Abu Ja'far,
For deeds like his father Abū Ja‘far's;
قَد سارَ بِالمَجدِ فَخَيَّم بِهِ
وَغابَ عَنّا بِالنَدى فَاِحضُرِ
has departed with glory and encamped with it,
You marched on with glory and camped with it,
and gone from us with bounty—so come!
And hid from us in dew, so appear!
هَل أَنتَ مُسقينا سُخامِيَّةً
حَمراءَ مِثلِ الذَهَبِ الأَحمَرِ
Will you give us smooth, aged wine to drink,
Will you give us to drink a red draught
red as red gold?
Like red gold, sparkling and pure?
