1. Commander of the Faithful, is there no relief

    for us to hope for? For despair has lasted long.

  2. Our officials will have nothing but debauchery;

    each of their lovers has conditions.

  3. So one governor is sodomized, disgracing

    his subjects, while another governor sodomizes.

  4. We found Nahshal an Arab of an age

    in whose latter days the Nabataeans become Arabs.

    with no shroud prepared, nor any burial perfume.

    with its grayness are baseness and degradation.

  9. And among his poems—may God disgrace

    his folly—is: ‘Lo, the companions have departed!’

    a tyrant's authority, full of injustice.

  11. She menstruates on mules, and every day

    fresh blood lies along the sides of their upper chests.

  12. The ranks rise for her, while there gleam

    forever on the mules' chests strings of jewels.

  13. She has taken charge of our affairs in word and deed;

    she speaks, and the farting ass falls silent.

  14. So, what humiliation for the courier and his senders,

    when the wanton woman unseals his letter-pouches!
