1. Will you not marvel as I marvel?

My beloved wrongs me and makes no amends.

  2. And I seek his favor despite his injustice,

but he refuses me and remains unyielding.

  3. You reproached me—may I be your ransom, O guilty one—

so I came to you weeping and seeking forgiveness.

  4. I bore the sins in your stead, though they were yours,

and became certain that I myself was the guilty one.

  5. O Dhalfāʾ, if what pleases you

is my torment, then go ahead—torment me!

  6. Ah, many a woman seeking union with us—

we denied her what she sought.

  7. We sought your favor by angering her,

and your stinginess is sweeter than her generosity.
