1. O reproacher who will not be satisfied,

    sleep peacefully, for I taste no sleep.

  2. Indeed, through loving you, I have a longing that has consumed

    my sleep and made my bed restless.

  3. So my eyelids are in tears that do not cease,

    and my heart is in anguish that does not pass.

  4. O you of little fairness, how often I demand of

    you a promise that is never fulfilled!

  5. Then repay me with union, if it is a debt,

    and reward me with love, if it is a loan.

  6. May my father be ransom for a young gazelle: my heart is caught

    by eyelids languid and ailing in their gaze.

  7. Love for him beguiled me, so I began to reveal

    some of it, while hiding some from people.

  8. I do not forget him as he appeared close by,

    swaying as a tender branch sways;

  9. nor my apologies to him, until he overlooked

    for my sake some of what I had done, and turned a blind eye;

  10. nor my clinging to the apples of his cheeks, kissing

    and pressing my lips to them at times, smelling and biting.

  11. O seeker who sought generosity,

    and wore out the high-humped mounts and exhausted them,

  12. come to the Imam's pools: you will find bounty

    that embraces seekers in length and breadth.

  13. For there bounty is lavish for whoever seeks

    lavish bounty, and generosity is unalloyed.

  14. He is more bountiful than the clouds, and more lavish

    in his blows than the keen sword, and sharper.

  15. He governed the realm with sound judgment; in making firm

    and undoing, Islam's welfare rests with him.

  16. He seeks goodness in word and deed,

    and obeys God in giving and withholding.

  17. And when the thick of battle grows dreadful

    and the men's footing turns slippery,

  18. and you see the steeds beneath the stirred-up dust

    surging up with their horsemen,

  19. he assails the armored men with swift blow upon blow,

    and deep-piercing thrusts that make the horses recoil.

  20. God has favored Jaʿfar with qualities

    that made loving him a duty for the people.

  21. O true cousin of the Prophet, and O purest

    of Quraysh in soul, faith, and honor,

  22. you stood apart through excellence and loftiness, and so became

    the sky, while the people became the earth.

  23. And I see glory between a favor from

    you that is hoped for, and a resolve of yours carried through.
