1. May you remain a protector of the Muslims,

and live as God's caliph among us.

  2. For through justice and generosity you have made us forget

your forefathers, the guides, the rightly guided.

  3. God willed that you should remain aided,

so He ordained that you be called al-Musta'in.

  4. When the caliphs are counted on a day of boasting,

you outstrip their foremost by a clear margin.

  5. May we shield you from death; and indeed, there is benefit

for us in shielding you from death.

  6. I see the secure city grown more beautiful,

since you entrusted it to the upright, the trustworthy.

  7. You appointed your son al-'Abbas to it when

you approved his character in conduct and faith.

  8. You gladdened hearts through him on the morning that brought

his appointment, and you delighted the eyes.

  9. For the pilgrims have departed as delegations,

with thanks to you, traveling at evening and at dawn.

  10. You set their pilgrimage's path aright with a full moon

whose light lit up the plains and rugged ground.

  11. With the purest of Hashim in ancestry, and the highest

of them in honor, and the most generous of hand.

  12. And it is enough for you that in every circumstance

he resembles you, O Commander of the Faithful.

  13. The Muslims are delighted to see him

beside you as the Muslims' heir apparent.

  14. So renew the bond of allegiance to him, and you will renew

for them ease and gentleness in this world.

  15. People's expectations of him soar high;

    so graciously fulfill those expectations.

  16. We see him blessed; upon him are gathered

    the affections of all humankind.

  17. The stars of good fortune rose toward us through him,

though their risings had been absent for a time.

  18. And the rain was seeking reward; then, when

you resolved upon his appointment, we were given rain.
