1. May the grave calamity fall upon your enemy,

    and may devastating death befall whoever plots against you.

  2. We said, 'Rise again!' when you stumbled; and may it ever be that

    the misfortunes of the nights turn back from you.

  3. And often a noble steed stumbles, though it runs

    in the lead; and a keen-edged sword glances off.

  4. Your enemies will never triumph through a slip of yours,

    while God stands before you, a barrier and defender.

  5. One of the calamities drew near you, but it was repelled by

    God's protection and His continual favor.

  6. It revealed the imam's regard for you, and that he was

    anxious at heart, distraught over what befell you.

  7. Is the utmost of agonizing grief anything beyond

    a rising sob or eyes overflowing with tears?

  8. And it is to your credit that you were afflicted by such a trial,

    then escaped unhurried, your heart composed.

  9. Your complexion did not alter then, nor was there faltering

    of resolve; nor did any terror shake your breast.

  10. Until you appeared before us, your heart calm

    through courage, and the radiance of your face shining bright.

  11. News that distresses the envious whenever it comes to light

    and a teller or listener speaks of it again.

  12. Riders have carried this news of you, and often

    the widespread tale has humbled the one who envies you.
