1. He is false to what he promised;

    asked for union, he would not bestow it.

  2. For he has beauty all to himself,

    and is unrivaled in his coquetry.

  3. He sways upon a slender branch,

    and smiles, revealing hailstones.

  4. I have sought a way out

    of my love for him, but have found none.

  5. May my father be your ransom! I have no

    patience away from you, nor fortitude.

  6. My breast is constricted by what I conceal,

    and my heart by what I feel.

  7. And you grew angry that I complained

    of love's burning anguish and sorrow.

  8. And my complaining of love for you is a sin;

    so, if you pardon me, I shall not do it again.

  9. We have departed from Iraq,

    and from its oppressive summer heat.

  10. How delightful is life in Damascus,

    when its night grows cool!

  11. Where time is welcomed,

    and the city is found fair.

  12. A journey that has renewed for us

    pleasure through its fresh days.

  13. God has ordained for the caliph

    right guidance on this journey.

  14. A king—all creation is powerless

    to untie what he has knotted.

  15. O Imam of guidance, who took precautions

    for the faith and strove diligently:

  16. Go forth with Saʿd al-Suʿūd—the Fortune of Fortunes—in

    the company of the One, the Self-Sufficient.

  17. And remain in glory and eminence,

    for us, until the end of eternity.
