1. O Abu al-Abbas, you have surpassed your people

    in refinement, character, and distinction.

  2. For had you been fashioned from anything other than humankind,

    you would then have been pure, unalloyed gold.

  3. And nothing exalted you but nobility of soul;

    yes, and through al-Mu'tazz you gained further strength.

  4. For you are the rain when it pours, and the lion

    when it charges, and the keen sword when brandished.

  5. As for poetry's racecourse, you seize

    first place there, as your due and by distinction,

  6. by perfecting its structures and devising

    its meanings; no fault is found in it.

  7. And if you use wordplay, you do not force the wording;

    and if you set it in antithesis, you richly embroider it.

  8. A reach that exhausts anyone else who seeks it,

    and exposes his shortcomings and incapacity.

  9. As for those who unjustly deny your excellence,

    we have indeed allowed them that.
