1. Now I am certain that sustenance is allotted in shares,

    When a cupper took charge of the postal service.

  2. He kept the glass vessels safe in a box, fearing dismissal,

    In it were countless lancets and shears.

  3. Until, when his gathering thinned of guests,

    And talk of revoking and confirming went round among them there,

  4. He called for Sawsan: “Bring the tools, for I have not

    Handled them for a year, with work unceasing.”

  5. So he brought him shears and a keen-edged blade,

    A razor with a sure mastery of shaving,

  6. Kept safe in napkins patterned with birds,

    Which fine embroidery and ornamental bands had adorned.

  7. Then you find him given to argument,

    In abundance, as cup and goblet pass round over them.

  8. And his face grows blotched when he is without them,

    As if, with his face darkened, he were a charcoal seller.

  9. Like a man with a severed hand, he is calm at the sight of them;

    But if they are far away, pain and illnesses assail him.

  10. If any land wept in grief for a calamity

    That befell it, then al-Sham would surely weep because of him.
