1. My stay in these rural districts has grown long,

And my lamenting there of my anguish and grief.

  2. With his mind at work, al-Jarjarāʾī kills

My friends in Iraq and my inheritance.

  3. May God hang above your testicles whatever

Ruin and wickedness you were once spared.

  4. The friends have complained of haste in taking

On your part—a practice you introduced—and of scant lingering.

  5. Have you resented reproach from one asking for more,

Or resented reproach from one urging haste,

  6. And an account of your forebears that puts one off

Hearing any tale recounted, and makes one sick?

  7. Al-Hurmuzān Shāmiṭ Bāqī did not consent

To your being ascribed to him; nor did Uʿammir Baththī.

  8. May God forgive—He is worthy to forgive—

My oath that you are his sons, and my perjury.
