1. Hurry to your family before nightfall, O man!

    This hope and expectation have lasted long.

  2. Rely on patience, and find a means

    to face the nights, for they are turns of fortune.

  3. How far noble deeds lie from a man

    who relies on begging from other men!

  4. And what does the young man seek through his resolve,

    when an appointed end is brought to him from behind?

  5. Land, the wealthy man, and honor that is

    unassailable are nothing but swords and serpents.

  6. Each man is occupied with his own affair,

    and al-Fazari is occupied with spears.

  7. So be a valiant horseman against Time,

    for Time is but a valiant horseman.

  8. Is it anything but the path of your forebears,

    who have passed away? Where are the great chiefs of old?

  9. They lived, then departed, and their memory departed;

    so nothing remains but traces and the ruined abode.

  10. The horses must wheel about with us,

    and the horses are our spears that reach their mark.

  11. So sometimes you shoe them with silver,

    and sometimes they are shod in blood,

  12. until you see death beneath our banner,

    its fires are quenched and flare up.

  13. So keep your modesty, for I am not given to dalliance;

    women and dalliance have no part in me.

  14. The raven of youth has flown off on its journey,

    and gray hair has settled and does not depart.

  15. This is for that, and Time is a means to wealth;

    and man has ailments within himself.

  16. The shifts of Time are a means to wealth,

    and man goes with Time wherever it moves.

  17. So persist in your gracious patience with it,

    and labor, for kings have labored.

  18. Beware of burdening people

    beyond what a human being can bear.

  19. Beware of stinginess when generosity is called for,

    even if you see that men have been stingy.

  20. And appeal to God, not to anyone else,

    for He is the best benefactor you can approach.
