A brother of mine among the Persian nobles has fulfilled
A brother of mine from the horsemen of Persia whose hands
with his hands most of my wishes and needs.
Fulfilled the great needs of my crisis and my wants
His sweet, pure sea spared me
His sweet, clear sea has sufficed me
the need to visit watering places of fouled, bitter brine.
The roses of the roads and paths of high sand dunes
And al-Ṣadaqī, in what we seek of him, is not
And As-Sadaqi is not in what we seek
hard to reach or difficult to deal with.
Of the difficult ascent, coarse remedies
I milked praise for him, and it came unforced,
I milked praise for him, so he came generously
its milk pure, its blend honey-sweet:
A clear messenger, gentle in temperament
rhymes like greetings of peace, surpassing in beauty
Rhymes more beautiful than the goodness
the stars of night, kindled by the darkness.
Of stars lit by time in the night
And a most grievous affair, and a manifest loss:
And the greatest scheme and obvious loss
strands of pearls given in exchange for glass.
Is pearls cast down that are sent in glass
