1. We found the virtues of Abu Salih

Likenesses of what was raised from his glory.

  2. He inherited from his father what had been acquired

By his refined father from his grandfather:

  3. Integrity that returns to its beginning,

And conduct that follows its straight course.

  4. What heights, then, has he not won the glory of,

And what lavish bounty has he not bestowed?

  5. He is the rain, pouring down in showers,

In swift succession, and sweet to drink.

  6. Our hopes have indeed clung to him,

To the cord of one rare and peerless in bounty.

  7. Our wishes and our need are that he be mighty,

And that God protect us from losing him.

  8. O Abu Salih, you are one for whom none can point

On the day of deeds, to an equal.

  9. So that miser is among calamities,

And the reversals of the nights; do not ransom him.

  10. Will you today confer a kindness

Upon one who bears you fruit from his affection?

  11. For he has neared success through a lord

Who, when he grants kindness, does not curtail it.

  12. And as for Abu al-Fadl's affair concerning my need,

Through it you have won half the praise it earns.

  13. So from you comes the word, beginning anew,

That you may receive the deed from him.
