You married her after she had set aflame
You married her after burning
the drinking companions’ hearts by tormenting them.
the hearts of regretful men with her coquetry.
And she had given those men, through her pledge,
She had given the people her word
what pleased them, and through her covenant’s bond.
and bound them in the pact of her covenant,
So how could you feel safe from her shameful ways,
So how could you trust her wiles
when you are well acquainted with her deceit?
when you know her fickleness?
And how could you be at ease, without shrinking back,
How could you be so relaxed and not withdrawn
at seating her with her lovers?
to sit her with her lovers?
She speaks to them through the themes of song,
She converses with them about the meanings of love
of a soul’s anguish and its longings.
and the outpouring of a soul and its longings.
And I think you conceal approval,
And I reckon you feign contentment
while she has corresponded with them through her khilyāq (meaning uncertain).
while she contacts them with her glances.
If you grant access to her love,
If you enable her love,
then indeed you grant access to her leg.
then you enable her betrayal.
