1. You made excuses to avoid union with the lovesick one tormented by you,

    and preferred dwelling far from us to being near.

  2. And you laid the blame for parting on me, though it

    is surely your fault, if you judge fairly, not mine.

  3. And, by God, I have not chosen forgetfulness over passion,

    nor have I turned from the love you have known.

  4. And only fresher and more firmly rooted have grown

    your place in my soul and your share of my heart.

  5. So do not combine estrangement with reproach, for I have found no one

    steadfast under loved ones’ estrangement and reproach.
