1. My anguish and sorrows were redoubled

    by the loss of my dear friends and brothers.

  2. Indeed, what angered me, had it aimed

    at justice in my case, would have pleased me.

  3. And the nights, in their shifting turns, have

    two judgments in what has troubled us.

  4. And in time's calamities, if examined,

    lie two flavors: honey and bitter herbs.

  5. And the days' custom, in what they do,

    is to mingle harm with kindness.

  6. Those heights of glory wail in grief for

    their Ayyub, son of Sulayman.

  7. For a man who, in noble leadership, was never found

    feeble in effort or remiss.

  8. He lies at rest, gone, and generosity follows him;

    no first remains to hope for, nor a second.

  9. Patience, Abu al-Abbas, patience in the face of

    a bereavement grievous to endure.

  10. And a calamity whose lingering effects set flowing

    the survivor's tears for the departed.
