1. I see no trace at al-Biraq that answers;

    the east wind and the south wind have silenced its signs.

  2. Decay has replaced freshness in its dwellings,

    as gray hair replaces youth.

  3. Life has dried up after them, though once

    it was known among them, fresh and moist.

  4. Overpowering grief, its inward anguish burning,

    and consolation, faltering and battered.

  5. Gray hair, that alarming visitor, alarmed me,

    coming by night; what disquiets disquieted me.

  6. Black hairs—when they turn white,

    the beloved turns away from union with the lover.

  7. After the blackness, what once tasted sweet grew bitter—

    the harvested fruit of our life, once delightful.

  8. That was Asma, when she resolved upon farewell;

    her parting, brought upon us, brought yearning.

  9. She glanced furtively, as the gazelle glances,

    and swayed as a slender branch sways.

  10. And toward Ahmad we dispatched the Mahri camels,

    for the wishes of a seeker who will not be disappointed.

  11. Leaning forward in the darkness, urged by song late at night,

    and swift-paced, their habit is unceasing toil.

  12. Making for a refined man, with nothing labored

    in the refinement of his lofty deeds.

  13. If you seek his equal, rain pouring in torrents

    is a likeness drawn from his generosity.

  14. And whenever fortunes are raced toward

    by one of their seekers, whether missing or hitting the mark,

  15. the helpless, mean-spirited man stalls in their pursuit,

    and the resourceful, noble man presses onward.

  16. And I see that the men, when they left his course clear,

    and their runner and fleet racer reached their limit,

  17. gave up racing a front-runner who slowed his pace until

    his lead, the goal of pursuit, exhausted the wind.

  18. How much we have suffered from the claims of duty

    whose pains the hearts lament!

  19. Each day a duty visits, growing excessive

    in anguish; or someone close goes far away.

  20. Thus a meeting has calamity's lingering pains,

    and too much bidding farewell brings calamities too.

  21. May the caravan be watered, bound for Palestine,

    for among them is someone dear to us.

  22. Fellowship is present when he is present among us,

    and joy is absent when he is absent.

  23. A noble trait is yours, O Abu al-Abbas—

    Ayyub bestowed its native character on you in full.

  24. So live on as long as the doves sing, and as long as

    a stranger longs wistfully for a dwelling-place.
