You dealt a blow to Sulayman ibn Wahb,
You blamed Sulaiman ibn Wahb
O Abu Hasan, at the postal bureau.
Abu Hasan in the post office
And among the family of Abu al-Wazir you bellowed
And the family of Abul Wazir you barked at them
Like the young camel's bellow in the valley of Thamud.
The barking of a young camel in the valley of Thamud
And as for Ahmad ibn Abi Du'ad,
As for Ahmad ibn Abi Du'ad
You have indeed left Abu al-Walid orphaned by his loss.
Indeed, from him you have orphaned Abul Walid
So may God strengthen a pillar of Baghdad,
So God has strengthened a pillar from Baghdad
And keep al-Rashid's children safe from you.
And saved from you the children of al-Rashid
And every praise-poem of yours about people—
And any praise poem for you among people
Its end is surely: 'O eye, pour forth tears!'
Its destination, O most generous one, is
And into what blessing have you not cast
And which blessing have you not thrown
Ill luck from you that cuts notches in iron?
At it an omen of ill from you that pierces like iron
I beg your mercy! Pity the poets, and bestow a favor
Your compassion - have mercy on the poets and be generous
On them by avoiding Abu Sa'id.
To them by avoiding Abi Sa'id
