1. Whatever I may forget, I shall not forget

    the days of youth, when youth was my garment.

  2. Indeed, misfortunes have folded me up and unfolded me,

    as a child toys with the edge of a sheet of paper.

  3. I did not grow gray from the length of years; rather,

    long reproach on your account has grayed my head.

  4. My tears betrayed what lay within my heart,

    as did the succession of deep sighs from my breath.

  5. And I drank the cup from the hand of a dark-eyed man,

    like a slender bough, slim-waisted and swaying gracefully:

  6. white wine, passed around among us by a fair-skinned man,

    whose lips were the cup's admixture all night.

  7. Wine and enchantment mingled with the water of generosity,

    from what remained in your cup, O Abu al-Abbas.

  8. What have I to do with drinking your bounty, O son of Muhammad?

    Kindi bounty is no familiar companion of mine.

  9. Your beautiful qualities have dyed, with their

    moonlike radiance, the dark traits of your companions.

  10. Your eager stirring to give always reminds me

    of the south winds' work upon a myrtle bough.

  11. O Sa'id, eminence is only what was built

    for you of old by the sons of Umm Unas.

  12. And to you, house of al-Muhajir, have migrated

    all noble virtues, away from everyone else.

  13. For your father is ancient glory, and your conduct

    is a lasting endowment to generosity and valor.
