O wearer of sidelocks and a forelock,
O you who suffers from headaches and dizziness
And wearer of red and yellow!
And wears red and yellow attire
If only, since you gave me no gift
If only when you did not grant my wish
That would satisfy me, you had given me one just once.
You had satisfied me just once
My praising you and pinning on you my
My praise of you and keeping ties with you
Hopes were nothing but a journey of delusion.
Were but hopes of obtaining favors
I count your forefathers; among them there is no
I do not count your fathers among
ʿAwf, nor Saʿd, nor Murrah.
The generous, happy or noble
I accepted that pittance, since I could not find
I accepted that meager gift when I found
A white blaze on a wholly unmarked beast.
No generosity with a silent brute
I took it, paltry as it was; and as they say:
I took it mockingly, and by their words
Take a brick from a bad debtor.
Take from an enemy a compensation
