1. Who will defend me against the graceful gazelles

    And shelter me from the cruelty they have in store?

  2. Indeed, the eyes' magic has led my mind astray,

    And the roses of their cheeks have denied me sleep.

  3. And hopes still torment

    Us with the beauties' stinginess and generosity.

  4. And one delight of life—if life is kind—

    Is that union should come after rejection.

  5. And my life be ransom for her who carried off my soul,

    Then begrudged me even her slightest favor.

  6. Her dwelling has grown distant, so there is no meeting,

    Except a phantom that visits me in slumber.

  7. Do you think she has kept her pledge, or is it

    The beauties' custom to break pledges?

  8. Or do you think I shall soon meet

    My solace, whom I long for from afar?

  9. The Imam al-Muʿtazz bi-llāh is the most deserving

    Hashimite of victory and support.

  10. Heir to the mantle, the staff, and God's rule

    Over every master and subject.

  11. He is noble in soul, in mothers, and in fathers,

    And surpasses others in the virtue of his forefathers.

  12. Al-Manṣūr's resolves, their paths directed

    Toward him, and al-Rashīd's noble deeds,

  13. In the exalted station of the two forebears of ʿAbd

    Manāf's line, and in well-supported lordship.

  14. A king who fills the eyes with splendor

    When he appears in his fastened crown.

  15. God disowns the profaner of God's sanctuary,

    In unbelief, and of His House that people seek.

  16. His endeavor there was not pleasing,

    Nor was his course rightly guided.

  17. Yet what brought some calm to the hearts

    Was his coming to us shackled in iron,

  18. Knowing that the banner of victory is not

    Raised except alongside the black standards,

  19. And acknowledging that the caliph is made victorious

    By a mighty bulwark of retainers.

  20. They are not daunted by an enemy, nor are they

    Vulnerable in equipment or in numbers.

  21. May God bless the caliph in the victory

    In the south, and in the new building.

  22. Joyous news, and a building of good fortune,

    In a lofty edifice raised beside al-Simāk,

  23. Above a polished structure of glass,

    Wondrous in its design and extent.

  24. If its beauty appeared to Solomon's jinn,

    They would fall down, bowing and prostrating.

  25. We have reckoned the day on which you came to it

    A feast day, for its surpassing beauty.

  26. I visited it just after the month's beginning, with

    Auspicious birds and propitious stars,

  27. In a season when its fresh narcissi resembled

    Necklaces of pearls and choice gems,

  28. Between spring blossoms that greet

    You and a pleasant lingering spell of winter.

  29. So live on, and chastity and forbearance will live on; stay safe,

    And life will stay safe for bounty and generosity.

  30. And it rests with God to sustain you among us

    With complete blessing and a gracious increase.
