1. If your heart softens toward me at what I suffer

From excessive torment and excessive longing,

  2. And you generously grant union to a lovesick man,

Then give me something of yourself before departure.

  3. If you bid farewell with a kiss,

It would be a kindness for which parting deserves thanks.

  4. I fear parting because of distance,

At times, yet love it because of the embrace.

  5. God has indeed entrusted to Ja'far

The safeguarding of religion and the suppression of hypocrisy.

  6. Obedience to him is a duty, and disobedience to him

Is among the gravest forms of unbelief and the most extreme dissension.

  7. Whoever does not offer you sincere counsel from his heart

Has no share in his religion.

  8. So remain safe for us, and our glory will remain safe for us;

And live on, for goodness endures as long as you live.

  9. Damascus has indeed become a paradise,

With verdant meadows and sweet-soiled rocky tracts.

  10. Its spacious air is fresh with dew,

And its smoothly flowing water is sweet to taste.

  11. And time smiles amid its shades,

And life there has delicate fringes.

  12. It gazes toward you, yearning

For your nearness and a meeting soon.

  13. And how could you not favor it with your love,

When its summer is like Iraq's winter?
