1. Religion's affairs were brought together after division,

    through al-Mutawakkil, the upholder and appointer of successors,

  2. through one granted success and enabled for righteous deeds,

    and beloved among the righteous, looked to with hope.

  3. A king who, when he carries his firm purpose into effect,

    is not turned from his resolve by the reproachers' objections.

  4. Your fine steeds went forth early, with horsemen upon them,

    with Mashrafi swords and slender spear-shafts,

  5. white-blazed and white-socked, seeking a battle

    against the Byzantines, on a white-blazed, white-socked day.

  6. And I think you will not turn their heads back

    until you encamp upon the gulf, pressing down with your breast.

  7. May the festivals endure for you, as you rejoice in them,

    in your glory and in a life of greatest length.

  8. And may you be rewarded with the highest rank hoped for,

    in the Garden of Paradise, without being hastened there.

  9. For all righteousness lies in your supplication as you pray

    for the Muslims, and in your accepted worship.

  10. You taught us the Prophet's ways and his guidance,

    and judged among us by the revealed Book.

  11. Truly, you inherited from the Prophet; and only

    one appointed to succeed a messenger has inherited guidance.

  12. The caliphate sought refuge at your two flanks; indeed, it is

    a share for the best of Hashim, then the next best.

  13. And it became impregnable in the shade of your might, and so came to be

    in the finest station and the most secure stronghold.

  14. So make its precincts flourish with rising fortune,

    and wear its gladness with fortune turning toward you.

  15. If I were to envy a people or vie with them,

    I would envy or vie with the people of Mosul.

  16. Spring visited their dwellings, and you visited them,

    and both of you bear a smiling flash of lightning.

  17. So it lit up every dark mountain pass among them,

    shrouded in gloom, and every barren valley grew fertile.

  18. When, then, will you camp in al-Sham, so that

    my land may don greenery from your pouring bounty?

  19. A journey through which you cleared the eyes, and they saw,

    and eased the anguish of every heart locked shut.

  20. Each day you alight at a dwelling

    whose landmarks are new, and leave a dwelling behind.

  21. And when you wish, you appoint a day for staying,

    on which joy lingers, and a day for departure.
