1. Most of these calamities are alike;

    And return follows departure.

  2. And after the loved ones’ distance comes their nearness,

    And after souls’ suffering comes recovery.

  3. If misfortunes returned what they took,

    Wealth would return and poverty depart.

  4. So, if only that beloved had favored us,

    There might have been union, if not wealth.

  5. I have sworn that greed shall not sway me,

    Seductive though it be, nor shall the mirage deceive me.

  6. I have a cousin; when, with his aid, I strengthen

    My back, then tell calamities: ‘Do not hold back!’

  7. His ancestry is traced, through his Kaʿb and his Harith,

    To kings of honor and princely lords.

  8. Makhlad set him upon summits of honor,

    From which he looks down upon the two Dog Stars.

  9. So may God reward Abu Hasan with the best,

    For he shoulders the heavy burden of obligations.

  10. Radiant, his lineage springs from Madhhij;

    He bestows bounty even upon benefactors.

  11. And without fertile tracts, all land would be alike;

    And without deeds, all people would be alike.
