1. He betrayed my trust, once more betraying my trust—

the one who has my friendship and my pure affection.

  2. He stood alone in beauty, unchallenged

by any rival; I stood alone in sorrow.

  3. I reveal the secret of my love for him, and accept

both my error in what I did and my deliberate intent.

  4. Love's torment is not what you hide through the night;

indeed, love's torment is what you reveal through the night.

  5. He rose to pour, almost coloring whatever lay

nearby with the twin reds of wine and cheek.

  6. And freshly picked roses made a third; my way was

to smell a rose at times, and to kiss a rose.

  7. Tuesday night was lovely, and

Time's hand grew white for me through that night's darkness.

  8. He was that night the most pleasing of loved ones to me; and Abd Allah

is the most pleasing of the sons of al-Husayn ibn Sa'd.

  9. A lord who throws down his rival in

preeminence, with his strong, most powerful arm.

  10. Of all people, the broadest in the reach of his

benevolence, and the highest in the edifice of glory.

  11. He was granted decisiveness in speech, as is

recounted—or is his opponent not fiercely contentious?

  12. How admirable you are, completing a kindness

that gladdens the soul, or increasing a gift.

  13. That gift came to us by night, and the

tawny wine is among the finest things you freely chose to give.

  14. We have left the mounts to you, whether

a dark bay of rare hue, or a dun horse.

  15. And the sons of the Romans, from fair, tender-skinned,

radiant in complexion, to brown and curly-haired.

  16. And we contented ourselves with the one that surprised us—

a rose, when held to the light for drinking.

  17. It wore the blue of glass and appeared

as gold gleaming in lapis lazuli.
