I say to him, now bent on blaming me,
I say to him, though he blames me unjustly
renewing his attack on a deed of mine, done and done again:
Returning to me a principle from which he deviated
I have filled my hand with this world's riches many times,
I have filled my hands with the world's bitterness over and over
Yet the reproaching women never hoped I would be frugal.
Yet the ignoble did not covet my moderation
Nor has alms tax on wealth ever been due from me—
No obligatory alms were ever due on my wealth
And is alms tax due from a generous man?
Does obligatory alms apply to the generous?
