O you who put me off, denying me union,
O you who prolongs my torment and denies my plea
Why this estrangement, when there is no shame in union?
What is this aloofness, and what shame is there in unity?
I implore you not to lord it over a lovesick man,
I implore you not to gloat over one perplexed
Bewildered, now between the door and the house,
Who wanders between the door and the house.
Or one seeking refuge in union with you, whom you pity,
Or one seeking refuge in your affection, hoping for your mercy
Like the one who said, in private and in public:
Like one who says in secret and openly
He who seeks refuge with ʿAmr in his distress
The refuge seeker in hard times
Is like one seeking refuge from sun-scorched ground in fire.
Is like one seeking refuge from heat in fire.
