1. He has changed, or departed from his pledge,

    and harbored treachery without revealing it.

  2. He is well able to enslave hearts,

    in his jesting and in his earnestness;

  3. and magic may be found in his gaze,

    and roses may be plucked from his cheek.

  4. He wears hearts thin, though he disappoints

    expectations and breaks his promise,

  5. with his beauty, so like the full moon,

    and his figure, so like a bough.

  6. May the clouds' downpour water his land,

    when lightning blazes forth from their thunder.

  7. By my life, his estrangement was indeed

    easier for the lovelorn than his absence.

  8. Once I thirsted for union with him;

    now I have come to thirst for his rejection.

  9. Will the eye, then, be freed from its tears?

    And will the heart desist from its longing?

  10. We saw the virtues of mankind's imam

    as likenesses of the glory they had built for him.

  11. He gained might through God, deeming near

    justice's farthest reach as he journeys by night toward his goal.

  12. God saw how generous his hand was,

    so He granted him a generous portion from Himself.

  13. The subjects find repose in his shade,

    and humankind lives by his bounty.

  14. And the tongues of praise are united

    in thanking him and in praising him.

  15. He is the rain, pouring down in showers

    in bucketfuls, and sweet when one comes to drink.

  16. Indeed, our hopes have clung to him,

    to the cord of one rare in bounty, peerless in it.

  17. So may sovereignty endure for him in ease,

    and may his life be fulfilled in plenty.

  18. Our wishes and our need are that he be mighty,

    and that God protect us from losing him.

  19. You are treated by bloodletting, beginning afresh,

    for the outcome God grants through that bloodletting—

  20. a treatment that foretells, in its time,

    the eventual well-being that follows it.
