1. O you who weigh upon hearts: when you appear

    before them, they know the struggle will be long.

  2. O mote in the eyes, O burning thirst between

    the collarbones, a gnawing ache in the heart;

  3. O an enemy's appearance among dear companions;

    O a creditor arriving at the appointed time;

  4. O dead calm on a cloudy summer day;

    O merchants' faces on a day of slack trade;

  5. Leave us alone, for among us you are only

    the wāw in ʿAmr, or like a tale retold.

  6. Go without God's companionship, as long as you live,

    cast into every mountain pass and valley.

  7. You are led across the wastes and deserts

    by a blind guide much given to sleep.

  8. Behind you is the resolute avenger with the sword,

    and your feet are upon the thorns of the qatād.
