1. You have dwelt long on blame—do not go on.

    Who among you will do me justice, and who will excuse me?

  2. O you reproachers, what I have suffered

    from your counsel! O Lord, come to my aid.

  3. You have heaped blame on me and assailed me;

    you seek my ruin—so seek forgiveness.

  4. What crime has one committed, madly in love with one full of burning longing,

    like the sun at the height of morning?

  5. As though her form in the darkness

    were a priest’s lamp upon a pulpit.

  6. And her saliva, if I sip it,

    I would think it a breath of strong-scented musk.

  7. And her face, when I beheld it—

    description falls short of it, so see for yourself.

  8. And never again blame one

    whose heart holds something like green brushwood.
