1. O Ali—rather, O Abu al-Hasan, who holds

    the charming, beautiful woman in bondage.

  2. Fear God—you are the poet of Qays;

    do not be a disgrace to the poets.

  3. Indeed, your companions who stayed yesterday

    came for fornication, not for singing.

  4. You are blind, and fornicators have misdeeds—

    abominable ones, concealed from the sighted.

  5. Suppose you listen to the talk—what knowledge

    have you of its winks and gestures,

  6. and playful exchanges with eyes and hands,

    and the arranging of a time to meet?

  7. Indeed, by my life, they have embarked on a course of treachery

    and committed a hideous, shameful deed,

  8. with no regard for the sanctity of affection

    and no remembrance of the covenant of brotherhood.

  9. They made their decision, while you are a donkey

    laden with dullness and stupidity.
