1. O, the beauty of the horses as they emerge at dawn!

They gleam like stars in the darkness about them,

  2. as though their coloring had been masterfully wrought

by a painter who perfected their portrayal.

  3. They carry ravens upon their backs,

in patterned fabrics of their silk.

  4. If they fear being unseated when the horses shy,

they reach down with their hands toward the horses' throats.

  5. They seem, with the rope across their breasts, like

    falcons rising in their jesses.

  6. They sped past, racing the wind as they went,

while the sun's radiant light had vanished

  7. in the dust shining with its illumination.

Until, when they heeded their guide

  8. and turned back, plunging in their descent,

like birds swooping down toward their nests,

  9. on a racecourse smiling to reveal its full moons,

where men became battlements for its wall,

  10. the honor of first place among their throng was granted

to him who surpassed the nation in its affairs,

  11. in its excellence, its generosity, and its goodness:

Ja'far, the defender of its frontiers.

  12. Resplendent in him, as he sits upon its throne,

is a caliphate he has been granted success in governing.
