1. Sons of Uthman, among Ghani you are

    rabble, and it is rabble among Qays.

  2. When is camel-hump fat served to guests in your two courtyards,

    while bitter water is sold among you?

  3. And your miser is nicknamed for generosity,

    out of folly, and your coward is named Shuja ('Brave').

  4. Is it through names and titles among you

    that glory and lofty honor are attained?

  5. And after your slave Nazif, you were

    a flock of sheep with beasts of prey let loose among it.

  6. I am grieved by what Sulaym did

    to you—war is heinous and hideous—

  7. and by the abandonment of homes—neither Saruj

    is a dwelling for the little clan, nor al-Firagh—

  8. and by the clans' desertion at the approach

    of Hawazin to your home, rushing.

  9. And they indeed slaughtered you wantonly and unjustly

    at the hill of Uqayb, when sword-fighting was detested.

  10. So the sons of Abs did not stand guard over you,

    nor did Fazarah say, 'Do not be afraid.'
