1. Ask her, you two, how she squandered our union,

And cleft the mountains of our affection.

  2. And now, in al-Sham, she deems it forbidden

To keep ties with me, but lawful to forsake me.

  3. Will the fair one tell me whether it was estrangement

She meant by shunning me, or coquetry?

  4. In her I recalled a bān-tree branch, when

She appeared, swaying proudly in her beauty.

  5. She resembles it in swaying and bending,

And mirrors it in stature and proportion.

  6. And I have a liver that softens at youthful dalliance,

And in passion it will do nothing but burn.

  7. And an eye that spares me no streaming tears,

And a heart that spares me no madness.

  8. And the slanderers have learned how steadfast my pledge is,

When the pledge of the one I love has changed.

  9. And that I have always been enamored of Layla,

Despite the slanderers' spite, and never shall I cease.

  10. And I have not deemed my love for her foolishness,

Nor my longstanding passion for her error.

  11. O Commander of the Faithful, you hold the most favored

Station among God's servants in the sight of God.

  12. You restored the faith, whole and safeguarded,

Whereas before you it was diminished and debased.

  13. When the caliphs are counted on a day of boasting,

And their glory stands forth, rising high and towering,

  14. You prove the greatest of them in stature and renown,

And the highest and noblest of them in deeds.

  15. And the earth's regions did not grow fair until

You ruled its plains and mountains,

  16. With a face that fills the world with light,

And a palm that fills the world with bounty.

  17. I see the new year has run with good fortune,

And come round with blessings for you as it turned.

  18. Conquests follow one another from the regions,

As clouds overtake one another when they come in succession.

  19. And Egypt's wealth came to you with precious gifts;

So I have seen nothing like it in triumph and wealth.

  20. What lends beauty to my praise of you is that I,

Whenever I recount your greatness, find words to say.

  21. And I am not to be blamed for falling short in thanks,

For you have laden me with weighty favors.

  22. You have indeed raised my name in East and West,

And you have bestowed on me prestige and wealth.

  23. And a thousand is not the utmost I expect

And hope for from your bounty when it flows on.

  24. When your two hands hasten to give,

We are safe with you from broken promises and delay.

  25. And if you readily offer a promise of kindness,

Then you follow your words with deeds.

  26. I saw good fortune and blessings when

You saw the whiteness of your face and the crescent moon.
