1. Will my overwhelming love for her avail me with Layla,

And my burning anguish, which I reveal and conceal?

  2. Or does Layla not approach whoever approaches her,

Nor draw close in union to whoever draws close to her?

  3. Fair-skinned: youth has kindled her cheeks, and watered

Are her eyelids with vintage wine by her cupbearer.

  4. In the rose's redness is a likeness of her fiery glow,

And the slender bough has a share of her swaying.

  5. She is certain that I have not gratified her ill-wisher

Where she is concerned, nor heeded her slanderer's words.

  6. And on the day departure from her became urgent for us, amid

Passionate longing, and their driver sang the camel-litters onward,

  7. She rose to bid me farewell in haste, and already there had burst forth

The first drops of twin tears she let flow.

  8. She found my departure from her strange, so I said to her:

    Toward the Caliph their driver urged the pale camels onward;

  9. Toward an imam to whom belongs every honor

Reckoned in the world's past and future.

  10. O Caliph of God, glory has nowhere to turn

Except toward the favors you have come to bestow.

  11. Thus no virtue exists but you are clothed in it,

And no subjects exist but you are their shepherd.

  12. A dominion like Solomon's dominion, before whom bowed

All creation, its farthest and its nearest.

  13. And your nearness to God, which you reveal

To us through the proof of your deeds and make manifest.

  14. When the earth's drought held us in bondage, and withheld

From us were the clouds, until we no longer hoped for them,

  15. And you rose to pray for rain for the Muslims, there coursed

The bright clouds, letting rain loose from their waterspouts.

  16. No cloud, then, but its downpour streamed,

And no hollow but its valley ran with water.

  17. And the obedience of wild beasts, when they came to you, including a frightened buck,

Dark-marked, and a pale doe with kohl-dark eye corners,

  18. Like a tender, budding-breasted maiden: hidden upon her breast

Is the stain of perfume, yet visible upon her collarbones.

  19. Two thousand came, as ordained, hastening

To accept what you had intended for them.

  20. If you traveled, they traveled; if you halted them, they halted,

Necks turned toward you, with glances they cast in succession.

  21. They turn back toward your face, in which they see

A majesty whose beholder glorifies God again and again.

  22. Until you crossed al-Qatul with them, and they scattered

At al-Hayr, in an open expanse broad on every side.

  23. Thus the River Nayzak is one of their watering places,

And the hill's open ground is a haunt among their haunts.

  24. Had it not been for what they recognized in you that day,

Their unruly ones would not have obeyed you amid the deserts.

  25. Two distinctions you alone among kings have won, yet have not

Shown arrogance or conceit in attaining them.
