1. I seek refuge with Badr from parting with my beloved,

    And from my burning anguish in his wake, and my sobbing,

  2. And from my grief at losing him, a delight to eyes

    When they are trained upon him, and the preoccupation of hearts.

  3. He goes his way, his home nearby, yet estrangement stands between us;

    And many a man whose home is near is not truly near.

  4. And one like Abu al-Najm, refined in his conduct,

    Has pitied one who yearns, or shown compassion to a stranger.
