It is Saturday, and we have what suffices a freeborn man:
A Saturday of plenty, and we have enough to indulge
food, and the watering place is near us.
Food aplenty, and roses are near at hand
And we have a gathering place beside the river, wide-open
We have a gathering by the river, so come
and spacious, where hearts find rest.
A spacious, relaxing spot to soothe hearts
And continual wine-drinking draws you near to the one
Endless drinks bring you close to her you love
you loved, even if your beloved has shunned you.
Though the beloved may have spurned you
So come to us, O Muhammad son of Yazid,
So come Muhammad ibn Yazid
in concealment, so the watcher does not see you.
In seclusion where no watchman can see you
Let us drive away care by drinking three cups in the morning,
We will banish cares with a morning of joy
filled to the brim, through which sorrows are banished.
In pastures that dispel sorrows
Indeed, in wine is relief from love's burning anguish,
For in comfort there’s respite from love’s ardour
and my heart yearns joyfully for the man of letters.
And my heart is inclined to the man of letters
Do not let my gray hair alarm you, for I
Let not my greying hair stop you
have not been turned from youthful dalliance by gray hair.
For youthfulness has not been marred by greying
