1. Sons of Uthman, among Ghani you are

    rabble, and Ghani is rabble among Qays.

  2. When is camel-hump fat served to guests in your two courtyards,

    while bitter water is sold among you?

  3. And indeed your miser bears the byname 'Generosity',

    foolishly; and your little bird is named Shujaʿ, 'Brave'.

  4. Is it by names and titles among you

    that glory and lofty honor are attained?

  5. And after your slave Nazif, you were

    a flock into which beasts of prey were let loose.

  6. I am grieved by what Sulaym did

    to you—and war is atrocious and appalling—

  7. and by the abandonment of the dwellings: Saruj is no longer

    a home for the little tribe, nor is al-Firagh;

  8. and by the clans' desertion, when

    Hawazin made for your home in haste.

  9. And indeed they slaughtered you, wantonly and unjustly,

    at Tall Uqayb, when combat was loathed.

  10. So the sons of Abs did not defend you,

    nor did Fazara say, 'Do not be afraid.'
