1. Indeed, the emir Abu Ali—now

his two hands have gathered noble deeds and lofty honor.

  2. He guarded the caliphate, defending its honor,

and spared the caliph whatever troubled him and proved intractable.

  3. A sword against his enemies; never are dispelled

the shadows of black calamities until it is drawn.

  4. Deliberation restrains his impulses; yet at times

his resolve advances and becomes a mighty host.

  5. His retainers stand on either flank; if he sets out at dawn,

he leads forth unassailable lions and lion cubs.

  6. His enemies have experienced, among his onslaughts,

what blunted the rebels' edge and made an example of them.

  7. How many a man heedlessly astray cursed his own deeds

when he fell beneath the swords, flung to the ground!

  8. Like Abu Numayr, when his waywardness persisted,

and excessive rebellion carried him to such extremes.

  19. to straighten what is crooked in their governance

and make every retreating affair advance again.

  20. And many a rank of lordship has interceded for him

before he was called to it and deemed fit.

  21. The clouds had kept away from our land

until you came; then they rained there abundantly and poured down.

  22. So remain safe for us throughout life, a commander,

    and hopeful, honored, and revered.
