How long will your door stay barred upon a hope,
Why is your door locked against hope
Behind it, flowing free like water from rainclouds?
Behind it, the sweetness of rainwater dissolves
When I come to you out of reverence and honor,
When I come to you in reverence and honor
I return bearing goodwill unaccepted.
I return carrying kindness that is not accepted
So today I secure for myself a far-off destination,
So today I ready my soul to cast
Away from excuses offered me with falsehoods.
Away the illness that plagues me with delusions
So if I seek you, I expose the messenger to what
If I wanted you, I would send a messenger for what
I fear—a rebuff—and ask leave from a mile away.
I fear in refusal, and ask leave from inclination
Do you not see the rain poured upon a liver,
Do you not see the rain pouring down on arid soil
Parched—the earth's, with its breadth and length?
Scorched by a land of breadth and length
And wine is angry with us; it does not call on us.
While the winds rage against us, blaming us
So divert for us a branch from that Nile.
So flow for us a stream from that Nile
