1. May recurring rains water the companions of that dwelling,

    to their fill, and may lightning greet the rocky tract of Thahmad.

  2. He led the steeds against the steeds, grim-faced,

    unkempt; but for his might, they would not have submitted.

  3. In a mighty host like a torrent, or the night, or

    like rain clasping hands with the waves of a foaming sea.

  4. Blazing along its flanks, the spears embrace

    within it in an embrace of fellowship and affection.

  5. Pouring forth, flashing with the edges of keen swords

    beneath the dust, and thundering with neighing steeds.

  6. It brought darkness back upon the forenoon, reclaiming the

    gloom from the night of dusky, billowing dust.

  7. And it was as though his horses' hooves had engraved

    crescent moons in solid rock for those who watched.

  8. And as though the sun's eye had been struck, with

    dust made to serve it in place of antimony kohl.

  9. And one made lord of the spears, his slaves, drawing forth

    with subtlety the secrets of the still winds.

  10. Mute are they; he whispers to them, and they understand his speech,

    and their breaths answer him with rising sighs.

  11. Restless, as though the air were too narrow for him, he never

    ceases alternating between leaps and threats.

  12. And as though his master's ambition had said to him,

    'Grow tall, and climb the steps of greatness, and ascend!'

  13. Indeed, praiseworthy deeds are a station; no

    human being reaches its ease unless he strives.

  14. He whose own soul does not raise him to lordship

    apart from his ancestry is no lord.

  15. Robes of praise, chosen for you to wear by

    my gratitude: a peerless one wrought wonders for a peerless one.

  16. When I spread their splendid brocade over you,

    lofty glory said to you, 'Hope, and renew!'
