The dwelling where you alighted was watered, O Hammām,
by the bounty of your palm—that precious, gentle rain.
How shameful, then, if you sought for it more of the down—
—pour of a cloud, when you yourself are a cloud within it.
No land where you have not appeared possesses a morning;
no house in which you dwell possesses darkness.
And whenever you alight in a country, then it—
—is the whole world, and you are all humankind.
Yours is a lordly eminence beside which boasting is abasement,
and a generosity beside which the noble are base.
And qualities as though they were a flowering meadow—except
that to the enemy they are swift death.
You are the very souls of high glory, O sons of War—
—qāʾ; all other people are merely bodies.
Wealth’s displeasure with your hands is what
the swords and pens have praised.
