سلوا الصبابة عني هل خلوت بمن

أهوى مع الشوق إلا والعفاف معي

Ask the morning breeze about me, did I meet with the one I love

Along with yearning except chastity was with me

تأبى الدناءة لي نفس نفائسها

تسعى لغير الرضا بالري والشبع

My noble soul refuses baseness for me

It aspires for nothing but pleasure and contentment

وهمة ما أظن الحط يدركها

إلا وقد جاوزت في كل ممتنع

And an ambition I don’t think disgrace can reach

Unless it has crossed every difficult path

لا صاحبتني نفسٌ إن هممت لما

أرضى بها غمرات الموت لم تطع

No soul accompanied me when I aspired for what

Floods of death obeyed but did not comply

على جناب العلا حلي ومرتحلي

وفي حمى المجد مصطافي ومرتبعي

My home and destination are under the shade of glory

And in the heat of battle are my dwelling and seat

وما نضوت لباس الذل عن أملي

حتى جعلت دروع البأس مدرعي

And I never took off the garment of honor from my hopes

Until I made armors of might my attire

وكل من لم تؤدبه خلائقه

فإنه بعظاتي غير منتفع

And whoever’s manners are not disciplined by his virtues

Will not benefit from my bones
