1. جاوَرتُ بِالحُبِّ قَلباً لَم تَذَر فِكرى

    لِلحُبِّ مُستَمتِعاً فيهِ وَلَم تَدَعِ

    I dwelled with a heart that love left no thought for me

    To take pleasure in love, yet left me not

  2. مُفَرِّقاً بَينَ هَمٍّ غَيرَ مُفتَرِقٍ

    عَنهُ وَبَينَ سَلُوٍّ غَيرَ مُجتَمِعِ

    Parting worry that parts not

    From it, and consolation that gathers not

  3. يَصبو وَلكِن يَكُفّ الحِلمُ صَبوَتَهُ

    وَأَشرَفُ الحُبِّ أَدناهُ مِنَ الوَرَعِ

    It pours, but forbearance holds back its pouring

    And the noblest love is the lowest in piety

  4. وَبي أَمَسَّ غَرامٍ لَو أَنِستُ إِلى ال

    شَكوى وَلكِن أُعِدُّ الصَبرَ لِلجَزَعِ

    In me is a passion that, had I complained, would not cease

    But I ready patience for anguish

  5. ما بالُ أَهلِ زَماني مِن تَجاهُلِهم

    بِمَوضِعي بَينَ مَغبونٍ وَمُختَدعِ

    Why do the people of my time ignore me

    Between a duped one and a deceiver?

  6. مَن لَم تَزِد قَومَهُ أَفعالُهُ شَرَفاً

    بِالفَضلِ فَهُوَ لِمَعنىً غَيرَ مُختَرِعِ

    He who by his deeds increased not his people’s honor

    With merit is meaningless in purpose

  7. عِفتُ المَوارِدَ لَمّا لَم أَجِد ظَمَأ

    في كَثرَةِ الماءِ ما يُغنى عَنِ الجَرعِ

    I refused the watering places when I found no

    Thirst quenched in plenty of water without a sip
