1. ذو قصر أحدب من غير كبر

    محتقر المنظر خبار الحبر

    With a hunchbacked palace though not out of arrogance

    Disdained in appearance though versed in ink

  2. مستضعف لكن إذا ضيم انتصر

    مستأنس فإن مسناه نفر

    Weak yet victorious if oppressed

    Sociable though spurned if he draws near

  3. وإن جنى جنايةً لم يعتذر

    مفوق سهما إذا شك انسمر

    Never apologizing if he commits a crime

    Outstripping arrows if doubts assail

  4. نصاله الحب ومأواه الحفر

    لما رأى العصفور حباً قد بدر

    His weapons are love and his home the grave

    When the sparrow spied the seeds that appeared

  5. ارتاب بالحنطة ما بين المدر

    ولم يزل بين الرجاء والحذر

    He doubted the wheat amid the furrows

    Remaining 'tween hope and caution

  6. يبعثه الحرص ويعييه الخطر

    ثم هوى مستيقناً لما افتكر

    Driven by greed and exhausted by danger

    Then swooped with certainty when he recalled

  7. ان بني الدنيا جميعاً في غرر

    وأمل النفع ولم يخش الضرر

    That people of the world are all in peril

    Hoping for gain and fearing not harm

  8. فشده الفخ بأشراك الغير

    ولم يطق دفع القضاء والقدر

    So the snare captured him with hooks of others

    Unable to resist fate and destiny

  9. وكثرة الاطماع آفات البشر

    وفي تصاريف الليالي معتبر

    And many desires are mankind's defects

    In the turns of nights he is reminded

  10. والحزم أن تجزع من حيث تسر

    وآخر الصفو وإن لذ الكدر

    Prudence is to fear where you feel joy

    And the last of pleasures, though the bitterness pleases
